How to draw a song

Pick a colour and draw on the board, then press Play. Left to right is time, 4 or 8 bars that loop, and higher on the board is a higher note. Keep drawing while it plays and your song grows.

Every colour is an instrument: piano, guitar, violin, flute, trumpet, marimba, bell, chime, synth, voice, bass and drums. Tap one to hear it before you draw.

Four ways to draw: freehand, a straight line, steps (snaps to clean notes) or dots (tap one note at a time).

Beats: pick a style, Pop, Hip-hop, Rock, House, Lo-fi, Reggaeton, Trap or Bhangra. Busy adds extra hits, Fills adds a drum fill every 4 bars and Swing gives a laid-back groove. With the drum colour you can also draw your own: the bottom of the board is the kick, the middle the snare and the top the hi-hat.

Sound: Mood and Key pick the notes, so every line sounds musical. Space adds a room or hall echo and Echo repeats each note in time. Speed goes from 30 to 240, or press Tap in time with a song. The dot buttons set how many notes play in each beat.

Save audio records one loop as a sound file you can keep or post.

Keyboard: Space plays and stops, 1 to 9 pick a colour, E eraser, Ctrl or Cmd + Z undoes.

Want to practise real music? The Music Practice Lab has a harmonium, a tanpura and tuners.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign up and nothing to install. It runs in your browser on phones, tablets and computers.

Why does any drawing sound nice?

Every note is snapped to a scale that sounds good together, the same idea as playing only the black keys on a piano. So there are no wrong notes.

Can I share my song?

Yes. Press Share next to Surprise me and a link to your song is copied. Whoever opens it sees your drawing and hears it with the same speed and mood.

Is my drawing saved?

Your last drawing is kept in your own browser, so it's still there when you come back. It's never sent to us.

Why is there no sound on my iPhone?

On iPhones the silent switch also mutes websites. Flip it off silent and press Play again.
