How to use the stopwatch
Press Start and the clock counts up to the hundredth of a second, while the hand sweeps round the dial like a real stopwatch. Press Stop to pause it and Start again to carry on from the same time. Reset clears it back to zero.
Press Lap while it runs to record a split. Each lap shows its own time and the running total, the fastest and slowest are marked, and Copy laps puts the whole list on your clipboard to paste into a message or a spreadsheet.
Keyboard: Space starts and stops, L records a lap, R resets, F goes full screen.
Good for: running and swimming laps, rehearsing a talk, timing turns in a board game, cooking, science experiments in class, and seeing how long a task really takes.
Need to count down instead? The timer rings when the time is up, as an hourglass, a candle or a firework.
Is the stopwatch free?
Yes. No sign up and nothing to install. It runs right in your browser on phones, tablets and computers.
How accurate is it?
It reads your device's clock, so the time is right to the hundredth of a second however busy the page is. The numbers on screen refresh with your display, usually 60 times a second.
Does it keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The start time is kept rather than counted tick by tick, so it is still exact when you come back, even if the tab was asleep in the background.
What if I reload the page by mistake?
Nothing is lost. The running time and your laps are saved in your browser, on your own device, and carry on after a reload.
How do I copy my laps?
Press Copy laps under the list. Each line has the lap number, the lap time and the total, separated by tabs, so it pastes neatly into a spreadsheet too.
Does it keep my screen on?
While the stopwatch is running it asks your device to keep the screen awake, so a phone on the side of a track won't go dark.
