Guide

Singing with a tanpura

The tanpura gives you a constant reference for Sa. Start the drone, listen for a few rounds, then sing a long, steady Sa until your voice blends into the strings and the wobble disappears. From there, try Pa and the upper Sa.

Choose a Sa that sits comfortably in the middle of your range. The strings are, in order: Pa of the lower octave, two Sa strings tuned a hair apart, and the low Sa (kharaj). The sound comes from real tanpura recordings shared freely by musicians (public domain), tuned to your Sa right in your browser. Want to check individual notes? Use the harmonium. To see your voice against every swara as you sing, use Sing with the drone above or the pitch trainer.
