Tuning a bass

A 4 string bass is tuned E A D G, an octave below the lowest four strings of a guitar. A 5 string adds a low B underneath. Low notes take longer to repeat, so this tuner listens to a longer slice of sound than most and can still read a low B, around 31 Hz.

Pluck firmly with your finger near the neck and let the note ring: the first moment of a pluck is a little sharp, then it settles. Tune when the needle has steadied.

Drop D

Drop D lowers the E string to D for deeper riffs. Pick it from Tuning and the lowest string changes to match.

Practising grooves? Pair it with the metronome.

The tuner listens through your microphone only while it is on. Nothing is recorded and no sound leaves your device: each tiny slice is analysed on the spot and thrown away.

Other tuners: guitar, bass, ukulele, violin and the chromatic tuner for any instrument or voice.
