Tuning a guitar

Standard tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E A D G B E. Press Start tuning, pluck one string and let it ring. The tuner works out which string you played, lights it up and tells you to tune up or down. Turn the peg slowly until the needle sits in the middle and the light goes green, then move to the next string.

Tune up to the note rather than down to it: if a string is sharp, loosen it a little below the note and bring it back up. The string settles there and stays in tune for longer.

Other tunings

Drop D lowers only the thickest string to D, for heavy riffs and easy power chords. Half step down tunes every string a semitone lower, as on many classic rock records. DADGAD, Open G and Open D give the ringing, open chords used in folk and slide guitar. Pick one and the strings change to match.

Tap any string button to hear its note and tune by ear if you'd rather not use the microphone.

The tuner listens through your microphone only while it is on. Nothing is recorded and no sound leaves your device: each tiny slice is analysed on the spot and thrown away.

Other tuners: guitar, bass, ukulele, violin and the chromatic tuner for any instrument or voice.
